Jazz music is a meeting between European music and African music that developed from the life of oppressed black people in America. The birth of this musical genre was influenced by tribal drums, gospel music, blues and also field hollers. The basic instrument of jazz music originally used marching band musical instruments that were used to accompany the funeral ceremonies of the African American community in New Orleans. Members of this marching band were partly musicians in early jazz groups who were self-taught and played an important role in the early development of jazz.

Initially, this music was synonymous with negative things related to sex / naughty women and nightclubs, so it was called "jazz". Most of the early jazz musicians played their music in various bars and nightclubs in the localization area around Basin Street, New Orleans (Storyville). But then this music becomes a music that is both in composition and improvisation which reflects the melodies spontaneously. Even today, jazz has an exclusive, classy and respectable impression.

Jazz music originated in New Orleans and is influenced by a variety of music there. A joke but very believable is that jazz music started its time after a hair shop owner in New Orleans named Buddy Bolden blew his cornet, until half a century later jazz made many contributions to the world of music, studied at various universities and eventually became one of the the calculated flow of music.

In 1919 jazz musicians from New Orleans namely Kid Ory's Original Creole Jazz Band concerts in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. And in 1922 they became the first black band from New Orleans to make a record. At that time, jazz had started to become popular, developed and began to be glimpsed by white musicians. The first collaboration between black and white musicians occurred in 1926 when Jelly Roll Morton recorded with the New Orleans Rhythm Kings. At the same time, jazz began to be played in orchestral or big band formats, not only in small bands consisting of four or five people. Famous jazz bands that influenced Swing's birth were the Fletcher Henderson band and Duke Ellington band in New York and Earl Hines from Chicago.

At the beginning of the 1930s most of the jazz band groups began to adopt the swing style. Swing is a genre of jazz that developed in 1930 and became a separate genre five years later. Swing became the most popular music in America from the late 1930s to the late 1940s. Swing's popularity declined due to World War II which made it difficult to gather musicians to form a big band, the cost of the big band tour at that time was very expensive and there was a musician union strike in 1942-1948 so that no official record was produced. Swing then changed to a new flow, namely jump blues and bebop.

Meanwhile, the European jazz style began to develop in France with the emergence of the Quintette Du Hot Club De France in 1934. Belgian guitar legend Django Reinhardt popularized Gypsi jazz (a mixture of American swing and French dance music plus Eastern European folk music). In addition, there is also Latin jazz (a combination of Africa, Latin America, jazz music, Latin American classical harmony, the Caribbean, Europe and America).

Around the 1940s, young jazz musicians created a new style of music that was different from the swing music style, they changed jazz from just dance music to music that was more artistic and a little complicated. This style is called a bishop and is music to listen to not to dance.
